Green Roof Trials with Native Plants

The benefits of green roofs are well-established and include reducing and delaying stormwater runoff, reducing the heat island effect in urban areas, and reducing heat load to individual buildings during hot weather. What is less well-established is a full palette of plants to work with in green roof installations, as choices are currently limited to a few proven species. Native plants offer opportunities to expand our choices of plants to use.

Our green roof research is focused on conducting trials of native plants, planting media, and irrigation systems to produce full, long-lived, and weed-free green roofs that display all of the visual richness of natural ecosystems. While the content of our research is proprietary, we do collaborate with university programs.
