Green roofs are newly constructed or retrofitted existing roofs that contain a visible layer of vegetation.  The benefits of green roofs are well-established and include: reducing and delaying stormwater runoff, reducing the heat island effect in urban areas, and reducing heat load to individual buildings during hot weather.  In addition to being aesthetically attractive, green roof plantings create habitat for beneficial birds and pollinators.

Green roofs are traditionally planted with non-native sedums because of their ability to endure the unforgiving conditions green roofs present, such as heat and wind exposure.  Arch(E)Wild offers native alternatives to non-indigenous sedums.  We are also researching opportunities to expand the commercially available palette of native plants for use in green roof applications.
