Successful Landscape Restoration with Native Plants

Homeowners and land owners are more and more choosing native plants as the foundation of their landscape.  While native plants are featured widely in gardening magazines and ecology journals, landscaping with natives requires some relearning.  Native plants are propagated very differently from those found at traditional, big box garden centers.

The best native plants for pollinators are wild, thus the term rewilding. This describes the process of returning a landscape to a natural, functional landscape that performs many functions, including habitat for wildlife,

Restoration done right restores function to a landscape.  It requires a certain approach and methodology to achieve a truly restored landscape, and this is the goal of ArcheWild.

Essential Components

The Right Plants

True native plants are from the wild. They grow where the natural conditions are just right for their survival. So they do best in a created landscape that has those same conditions. Wild native plants are also open-pollenated, which builds in genetic diversity for plants that are more resilient in challenging landscapes.

We document the details about the ideal soil, sun, and water needs of all the species we grow. When we help land owners develop and implement restoration projects, we incorporate our years of plant and ecoregion data to help ensure successful planting.

The Right Form

Restoration professionals know that not all plants survive when planted during a restoration project.  Often this is due to the unreliable performance of live stakes and bare root plants, which may be cheap but are challenging to use due to their finicky nature and propensity for failure if the conditions aren’t just right.

At ArcheWild, we grow our own plants and they are fully rooted out and ready to start growing in the landscapes we design.  This means you start to see your landscape really take off after a year’s worth of growing, giving you a fast and lasting return on your investment.

The Right Time

They say timing is everything.  And this is very true when planting native plants.  Each species has its own unique conditions under which they will survive best, and we leverage natural cycles to our advantage on restoration projects.  Plants that need more water are planted in the spring when rains are more prevalent, others benefit from the cool nights of autumn to let their roots go deep in the ground.  Our knowledge and data help us set the right plan in place for long-term survivability of the plants.  Using different kinds of plants also aids in creating longer-lasting value:  multi-season landscape.  And the large variety of plants we grow gives you the unique functional landscape you desire.

The Right Team

We create the design, plan, and provide implementation services.  We grow our own plants from our extensive seed bank in our native plant nurseries and source from our network of trusted growing partners.
