ArcheWild Launches Its Ecoregion 064a Seed Farm

ArcheWild officially started its local ecotype seed farm in November 2014 in Hatfield PA.  This eight-acre parcel will host 100+ native plant species from EcoRegion 064a, which represents the Newark-Philadelphia-Baltimore corridor.

About 2 acres of warm season grasses are being grown in rows designed for mechanical harvesting. Another 4 acres will be planted in blocks for hand harvesting.  This seed farm is the first of its kind in that it is being planted using only 100% local ecotypes. The purpose of the seed farm is to provide a more reliable source of seed for our plug nursery and for our restoration projects.

    1. Hi Beth. There are basically only three sizable nurseries in the northeast that seem to care about genetics. One in Connecticut, one in New Jersey, and one in Pennsylvania (us). We believe that science and common-sense will prevail and the native plant movement will go local in a big way. Thanks for the reply.
